How Wearing Locs At Law School Gave Me Confidence

Locs have all the time appeared to be on the backside of the pure hair motion totem pole in mainstream (learn: white) media and fairly frankly, even inside the Black neighborhood. Regardless of having two aunts who’ve had locs for years, I struggled to see myself adopting a mode that felt tied up in a lot negativity. Locs appeared to be the antithesis of who I used to be. I knew societal stereotypes closely influenced my bias as a result of locs have in some way been related to being soiled, much less hygienic, unkept, and extremely unprofessional (keep in mind when Zendaya was unfairly ridiculed for carrying locs to the Oscars?). Regardless of the reward the pure hair motion receives on its floor, one of many motion’s many flaws is that, at instances, it excludes essentially the most pure model from the collective neighborhood’s exaltation — and together with it, kind 4C hair textures. For all these causes, I felt I could not bind myself to locs and the assumptions that include them as a result of I didn’t need to inevitably must show that I used to be nonetheless lovely, proficient, and sensible — particularly once I knew I used to be planning to pursue a profession in legislation.
